about
“As far as I can remember this song was written before I was aware of Leah's illness. I was thinking of many things when I wrote it: my friend/mentor James Rouch's death from ALS, which I experienced first hand; My annoyance with the popularity of vampires and zombies in the media; Ted Williams...but mostly it's just a personal statement regarding my belief that life's truth and beauty is largely dependent on the reality of death.
The more I read Leah's amazing Caringbridge journal, the more I realized that "If I lived forever" was for her. I think of her when I hear it and when I perform it. And as the terrible reality of her situation became more evident, as illustrated so bravely and beautifully in her entries, the more I felt that I needed her to hear it. When Rob wrote to say that Leah had enjoyed the song, that it had made her smile, I felt a great sense of relief and gratitude. I hope this song reflects that same mixture of honesty, humor, and love that I will always associate with Leah Rule.”
lyrics
If I lived forever I would go insane
Why should I live forever?
So don't freeze me, just squeeze me
Hang me from an apple seed
If I lived forever I would go insane
Why should I live forever?
So don't grieve me, just please me
and drown me like a chipmunk (chimp monk) in the sea.
